Catholic Schools Week Liturgy

Faith in Every Student

Catholic Schools' Week culminates in the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy at the end of the week.

Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, along with Catholic schools throughout the nation, celebrated Catholic Schools Week, January 30 through February 5, 2005.

Catholic Schools Week is an annual national celebration of the important role that Catholic elementary and secondary schools across the country play in providing a values-centered education.

This year's national theme was "Faith in Every Student: Catholic Schools." Catholic schools are proud of the intellectual, spiritual, moral, physical and social values that are emphasized in our schools.

Father Santorsola planned the liturgy for the day.  He formed a choir of thirty students and also involved the faculty and other student musicians.

Mr. Brown brought his own PA system which enhanced the sound of the music and singing throughout the liturgy.  His friend Glenn also came and played the piano magnificently.  Glenn and Mr. Brown gave us a beautiful rendition of Pachelbel's Canon in D with classical guitar accompanied by Glenn on the klavinova.  Mr. Moser and student Jamie Hendel brought their expertise and talent by strumming their guitars.

Andrew Walls kept it all "up-beat" as he played the drums.  Anna Emore played the violin for us during the presentation of the gifts.  It was very moving to hear "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring".  The student singers gave the liturgy that spark and ephemeral quality which raised our minds and hearts to God.Two of our priest alumni concelebrated the liturgy.

Father Chris Rogers and Father Herb Sperger added to the joy of the liturgy by their presence.

Father Bill Chiriaco was the main celebrant and Deacon Ed Purnell preached the homily which moved us to a greater understanding of the Gospel and the meaning of Catholic education.

Catholic School's are a great tribute and accomplishment of the Church in Philadelphia.  We are so proud of our Catholic educational heritage and history.  We are proud to be a part of Bishop McDevitt High School!
